The Second Salon scents its first wedding

Creating spaces has always been of interest to me. How can we use aroma to support us in feeling a certain way? And how can we bottle this, so we can go back and remember those special moments whenever we feel like it?

The Second Salon scents its first wedding.

Last month I had the privilege of scenting Emma and Joe’s beautiful wedding with a bespoke essential oil blend made just for them. ✨

As far as I know, using aroma at weddings isn't common. Let alone creating a bespoke aroma for a wedding. Which made this exciting, and also a little daunting. I did, however, take a lot of comfort in the work I'd done with DesignFreo back in 2020, where I'd created a bespoke aroma and diffused it into the main gallery space at the Fremantle Arts Centre for two months. Read more about the project here.

So back to Emma and Joe's wedding.

Emma and I had started talking about this project in April. After having some broader discussions around the concept I took an overall brief of what Emma and Joe liked and didn't like, and what they wanted the project to achieve. We had some in-person chats initially and then moved on to blend options going back and forth between Perth and Melbourne where Emma and Joe live.

Creating wedding spaces with scent

The first part of this project was creating special spaces using the bespoke aroma we'd created. We had two spaces to work with - the wedding ceremony at the church and then the reception venue.

For the church I set up two diffusers at the entrance - so the aroma would greet guests (and Emma and Joe, of course), as they entered.

For the reception, I set up five diffusers around the venue and had these running throughout the evening.

Custom wedding gifts

Our sense of smell plays such an important part in not only creating happy memories, but in remembering them.

Knowing this, I wanted to create something that guests could take home and use in their own diffusers. A custom-made gift was made for every guest - a vial of the bespoke blend with an accompanying thank you message from Emma and Joe.

I loved this project. It's one of the most important projects I've worked on.
